Torah Portion 'HA'AZINU'

This is my very first blog. How exciting. I never thought I would ever get into this game but after watching Julie and Julia the 'I will never' melted and here I am writing to you about my passion: Languages. I love languages--all languages. I think knowing several languages open up windows that you never dared looking through. It brings you closer to other people by closing the gap of 'being different'. I speak Hebrew, which is my mother's tongue, English, Yiddish, some French, some Russian, I can get the feel of what people say when they speak Italian or Spanish. When I was in the ninth grade, many of my classmates were from all over the world. Jews who immigrated to Israel. One day I decided to collect 'I love you" in all possible languages: French, Hungarian, Russian, Spanish, Iranian, Polish, German, etc. Do you know the miracles you can create when you say even one or two words to somebody in his own language? Boy! you immediately establish the first wide plank crossing to his/her universe.
So, I decided to play this game by blogging about Hebrew roots. What I will do, is once a week I will pick up a root from that Torah portion, and talk about it.

This week's Torah portion is called: HA-AZINU. האזינו

What an interesting word. The root of this word is. Aleph; Zayeen; Noon. that means EAR. אזן (OZEN)
The word HAAZINU is a verb in the command form meaning: LISTEN!
There are many words that come from the root A.Z.N
The word for equilibrium ( EE-ZOON) איזון or scales,( MOZ-NA-YEEM) מאזניים: to balance (L'AH-ZEN) לאזן
isn't it amazing that our ancestors knew so long ago that there was a relation between the ears and equilibrium.
I am impressed.
